Drive to Middling Cotton Gin

by Millie Horton

Fellow members, start your engines! I am proposing a drive on Dec. 2 (Wed) up to Middling Cotton Gin, a state-of-the-art gin located in St. Matthews, SC. Some of you may know that my father, a cotton merchant, ran a family gin in Cameron near St. Matthews. So I grew up with this machinery. There was always a fear that the gin would catch fire, a fact that Daddy constantly reminded us of as we 3 girls talked endlessly on the telephone. Finally, he put in a separate line for us girls!
Middling has agreed to a tour provided we wear our masks and socially distance. They prefer tours on Tues and Wed. which is why the mid-week date.
The gin is presently running and their season will run into the first week or so of January.
We will meet up at
Omar Shrine Temple at 176 Patriots Point Rd, Mt Pleasant. We will leave at 8:30am and then go up I-26 to Jedburg where we will get on Hwy. 176 which will lead us straight to St. Matthews. The trip up should take about 1.5 hours. (I’ll seek out a bathroom stop along the way.) After the tour, we will eat our own lunches at a spot to be determined and then return to Charleston. Hope you can join us!
Please let Dave know if you are interested in going.
